What is mains flushing?

Mains flushing (also called water flushing, water main flushing, or network flushing) is a controlled maintenance process that pushes water through a water distribution main at high velocity to remove sediment, restore water quality, and reduce the risk of discolouration at customer taps. It is the main preventive-maintenance technique water companies use to manage the effects of iron and mineral sediment build-up in ageing unlined metallic and cast iron mains, and it is the standard recommissioning step after a burst main or a repair that has disturbed the pipe interior.

Although the underlying idea (open a hydrant, run water through the main) is straightforward, a mains flushing programme is a planned piece of network engineering. The work runs to a schedule produced by the water company’s network modelling team, uses predetermined valve closures to force water along a controlled route, and is monitored against flow and turbidity targets so the discharge can be stopped at the point the pipe is clean. How mains flushing works

The technique is a balance of three things: enough velocity to lift sediment off the pipe wall, enough control to send the discharge to a predictable point, and enough monitoring to know when the pipe is clean. The hydrant-and-valve process

The displaced water typically runs to a surface drain or a tanker where volumes are high or where the discharge environment is sensitive.

When a flush is complete

The standard UK completion criterion is a turbidity reading at the discharge point below 3 NTU, held against the baseline reading of the incoming supply. Turbidity is monitored continuously during the flush using a calibrated sensor on the discharge line. Volume is tracked against the pre-calculated target so the crew knows how close the flush is to the planned end-point. When turbidity has dropped below the threshold and the target volume has been reached, the hydrant is closed, isolation valves are restored to their normal positions, and the work is logged against the water company’s network records.

Mains flushing techniques

When mains flushing is required

Brown or orange tap water is almost always caused by iron and mineral sediment disturbed in the water main.
