The job

Affinity Water engaged us to install a new water main in Great Dunmow, Essex. Main laying for a water company is the standard pattern where the utility is extending, reinforcing, or replacing part of its own distribution network, and the civils contractor delivers the scheme to the water company’s specification and sign-off.

This is distinct from self-lay, where a developer pays a third-party accredited provider to install new mains into a development that then gets adopted into the utility’s network. The two disciplines share a lot of their technique but differ completely in commercial structure, accreditation requirements, and sign-off route.

What we did

Mains installation to Affinity Water’s specification, delivered under WIRS accreditation. WIRS (the Water Industry Registration Scheme) is the accreditation framework that allows accredited contractors to work on potable water mains, and it applies equally to water company led main laying and developer self-lay.
