What is moling?
Moling is a trenchless installation technique used in UK utility civils work to place small-diameter pipes, ducts, and cables underground without open trenching. A pneumatically driven soil displacement hammer, known in the industry as a mole, is launched from a small pit and compacts the surrounding soil to form a narrow bore. The product pipe or duct is attached to the rear of the mole and pulled into the bore as the machine advances.
The mole itself is a cylindrical steel tool, typically between 45mm and 300mm in diameter depending on the model. Compressed air or hydraulic pressure drives a piston inside the mole, which hammers the tool forward through the ground. The forward motion relies on friction between the mole and the surrounding soil, which is why the technique only works in compressible ground types.
Impact moling has been used in the UK since the 1980s. The technique was developed by the German company Essig in 1966 and adopted widely across British utility networks as trenchless methods matured through the 1980s and 1990s. The United Kingdom Society for Trenchless Technology (UKSTT) was established in 1993 and remains the national body covering moling alongside directional drilling, pipe bursting, and related techniques.
How moling works
Moling works through controlled soil displacement. The mole is placed on a starting cradle in a launch pit, aligned using a telescopic sight on the cradle, and launched through the ground under compressed air pressure. As the piston hammers the tool forward, the soil around the mole is compacted sideways rather than excavated upwards, creating a bore through the ground.
A launch pit is opened at the start of the run and a reception pit at the end. Pits are typically around 1 metre square and 1.5 to 2 metres deep, sized to give the crew working room around the mole as it enters and exits. The product pipe or duct is attached to a swivel connector on the rear of the mole before launch, so as the mole advances the pipe is drawn directly into the bore behind it. No secondary stage is required to complete the installation.
Most impact moles are non-steerable. The mole travels on the line and level set at launch, and the body of the tool keeps the bore straight as it advances. Steerable moles do exist and use a slant-face head similar to horizontal directional drilling, but because drive lengths are short any real need for steering is limited. The chainage through the ground is tracked by marking the power hose as it feeds into the bore.
The bore itself is sized slightly larger than the product pipe. Standard practice is to run a mole with a diameter 15% to 20% larger than the outside diameter of the pipe being pulled through, to reduce friction and drag on the pipe as it enters the bore.
When moling is used in the UK
Moling covers a narrow but high-value set of UK utility civils applications. The technique suits short runs of small-diameter pipe or duct through compressible ground, with minimal surface disruption. Typical use cases fall into four groups.
Water service connections
New water service pipe runs from the distribution main into a property or across a plot often travel under driveways, verges, lawns, or footpaths. Moling installs the service pipe without breaking the surface between the launch pit at the main connection and the reception pit at the stopcock position. For new-build connections on developer schemes, the technique lets the crew install services into finished ground without damaging landscaping, block paving, or tarmac.
Gas, electric, and telecoms service runs
Service connections for gas, electricity, and telecoms networks follow the same pattern as water. A short pneumatic bore pulls a ducted cable or service pipe from a distribution point into the property or structure being served. Impact moling is applicable to pressure and non-pressure networks alike, and because it is a soil displacement method rather than a drilling method, there are no arisings to remove from site.
Cable and fibre duct pulls
Cable and fibre optic ducts sit naturally in the moling diameter range, typically 45mm to 150mm twinwall HDPE or smaller subduct. On civils schemes where a fibre or power duct needs to cross a road, footpath, or landscaped area, moling delivers the bore and pulls the duct in a single pass. The technique is commonly specified on ICP schemes, new-build estates, and telecoms rollout work where short crossings are the only trenchless elements in an otherwise open-trench design.
Domestic lead-pipe replacement
Domestic lead-pipe replacement is the largest single UK market for moling, though it sits outside the utility civils contracting scope this page covers. Homeowners replacing lead service pipes from the boundary stopcock into the property use moling to avoid lifting driveways, lawns, or patios. Specialist contractors, including businesses well established in the Hertfordshire area, focus exclusively on this market with small crews and consumer-direct booking.

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 are the statutory framework for water service pipe installation in England and Wales. The regulations define approved contractor routes, depth and material requirements, and the notification process for new service pipe work. Scottish equivalents apply north of the border under separate byelaws.
HSG47, the Health and Safety Executive’s guidance on avoiding danger from underground services, governs the ground survey and excavation work around every mole launch and reception pit. CAT and Genny cable avoidance tools are the expected compliance method under HSG47 for locating buried utilities before any ground is broken.
WIS 4-32-08 is the Water Industry Specification covering electrofusion jointing of polyethylene pipes. Moling vs directional drilling
Moling and directional drilling are often confused, including by AI-generated answers that treat the two techniques as synonymous. They are not. Both are trenchless, both install underground services with minimal surface disruption, but the mechanisms, scales, and use cases are distinct.

Method selection depends on run length, ground conditions, and the geometry of the route. A short run in clay under a driveway is a moling job. A longer run with any curvature, or in ground that is not compressible, is a directional drilling job. Where both techniques are feasible, moling is faster to set up, lower cost per metre, and quicker to execute. Directional drilling opens up longer and more complex routes that moling cannot deliver.
Moling limitations
Moling has well-defined limitations that shape where the technique gets used.
Ground type limits the method. The mole’s forward motion relies on friction between the tool body and the surrounding soil. Compressible ground like clay, silt, or peat works well. Rocky, stony, or very loose ground stops the mole or drives it off line. A ground survey is always the first step on any proposed moling run.
Range is limited. Single-shot runs beyond 30m become difficult to control, and the risk of the mole drifting off line increases with length. For longer runs, trenchless work moves to directional drilling or thrust boring rather than pushing moling outside its working range.
Steering is limited. Standard impact moles are non-steerable. Steerable variants exist but are rare, and in practice the short run lengths involved mean most UK utility civils work uses non-steerable tools. This places a premium on route survey and pit positioning before launch.
Vibration risk applies in older ground. The pneumatic hammering action can cause minor damage to fragile pipe materials near the bore, including asbestos cement and older cast iron. Pre-launch surveys and site maps mitigate the risk, and the method is avoided where known fragile services sit within the exclusion zone.
Moling in practice

Kit and crews
Moling machines sit in the small plant fleet alongside thrust bore machines, grabs, and mini excavators. Crews are NRSWA-trained and CAT4+/Genny 4 survey the route before any pit is opened, per HSG47. Standard reinstatement procedures apply under SROH for any road, footway, or verge crossing.
Where moling features
A short moling run under a driveway or verge connects a new water main to the stopcock on a new-build connection without open-trenching the surface. Inside main laying and repair contracts, moling is used selectively for small crossings where disruption needs to be kept down. Duct pulls on civils and ICP schemes use the same method where the geometry fits.
