Moling typically costs between £80 and £200 per metre in the UK when all project costs are included. The wide range exists because the price of a moling job is shaped by what surrounds the pipe, not the pipe itself. Ground conditions, the surface above the launch pits, and the length of the run all move the number more than the diameter of MDPE being installed. One thing stands out immediately: at domestic diameters (25 to 32 mm), the pipe itself costs a few pounds per metre. The material is rarely what makes a moling quote expensive. Labour, reinstatement, and site conditions account for the vast majority of the total.

Why moling costs vary so much

Online cost guides quote figures ranging from £80 per metre to over £200 per metre for what appears to be the same work. The reason they disagree is that moling is not priced the way most people assume.

Day rates and productivity

A moling crew costs roughly the same per day whether they install 10 metres or 40 metres. The per-metre rate is a function of how many metres the crew achieves in a day, not a fixed material calculation.

In soft ground with clear access and pits in a grass verge, an experienced two-person crew can install 30 to 40 metres of 25 mm MDPE in a single day. The labour and plant cost per metre in that scenario might be as low as £20 to £25. On a restricted urban site with London clay, existing buried services to work around, and pits in a carriageway, the same crew might only manage 10 metres. The daily cost is broadly the same, but the per-metre rate is now three or four times higher.

This is why published cost guides give such different numbers. They are each describing a different mix of jobs.

Reinstatement is the hidden cost multiplier

Every moling job needs at least two pits: one to launch the mole and one to receive it. The pits are small compared to an open trench, but they still need to be reinstated to the standard required by the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH) if they fall within the public highway.

The cost of reinstating those pits depends almost entirely on the surface type:

Two pits of around 2 m² each in a grass verge might cost £60 to £120 total to reinstate. The same two pits in a carriageway could cost £320 to £600. Spread that difference over a 10 metre run and the reinstatement alone adds £26 to £48 per metre on the carriageway job. Over a 30 metre run, it adds only £9 to £16 per metre.

This is the mechanism behind much of the price variation people see in quotes. It is not the pipe or the moling itself. It is what happens above ground.

Short runs cost more per metre

Mobilisation, equipment setup, pit excavation, and pressure testing are roughly the same whether the run is 5 metres or 30 metres. A contractor who quotes a 5 metre job and a 30 metre job faces similar fixed costs, but the shorter job has nowhere to spread them. Many contractors apply a minimum day charge for short runs rather than a pure per-metre rate. If you are comparing quotes, ask whether the price includes a minimum charge or is strictly per-metre.

What affects the price of a moling job

The main cost drivers, in rough order of impact:

Ground conditions. Soft, compressible soils such as sand or loam are straightforward. Heavy clay (common across Hertfordshire and much of the Thames Valley), chalk (the Chilterns), and stony ground slow the mole and increase the risk of deviation or stalling. Harder ground means lower productivity and higher cost per metre.

Surface type above the pits. Grass and soft landscaping keep costs down. Tarmac, concrete, and block paving push them up through reinstatement requirements.

Length of the run. Longer runs dilute the fixed costs and typically bring the per-metre rate down.

Pipe diameter. At 25 to 32 mm (standard domestic water service), pipe cost is negligible. At 63 mm and above, materials become a more meaningful part of the total. At 90 mm and upward, some contractors switch from moling to directional drilling, which offers better line and level control for larger diameters and longer distances.

Site access and existing services. Restricted access, tree roots, and congested underground utility corridors all increase the time spent on each metre.

Whether the job includes a mains connection. Connecting to an existing water main is a separate piece of work with its own cost, typically £200 to £500 depending on the main size and operating pressure.

Moling vs open-cut trenching: which costs less

The short answer is that it depends on the job. Some cost guides say moling is cheaper than trenching. Others say the opposite. Both can be right.

Moling tends to cost less when the run is longer than about 10 metres, the surface is something you would rather not dig up (a driveway, landscaped garden, or paved area), and reinstatement savings outweigh the equipment cost. Fewer square metres of reinstated surface means lower total cost.

Domestic water pipe costs vs commercial utility rates

Most online moling cost guides are written for homeowners replacing a lead water pipe under their front garden. The typical range they quote, £80 to £150 per metre, reflects the domestic market.

Commercial and utility moling operates at different price points. Under utility framework agreements, where contractors are delivering repeat work at scale for water companies, per-metre rates for similar diameter pipe can sit between £40 and £90 per metre. The gap is not because domestic contractors are overcharging. They are recovering mobilisation, travel between individual jobs, customer management time, and the risk of one-off work across fewer metres. A utility framework spreads those same costs over hundreds of similar jobs.

How to budget for a moling project

Get a site survey before comparing quotes. A per-metre estimate without a site visit is a guess.

Ask what is included. Some quotes cover pipe, fittings, reinstatement, connection, and pressure testing as a single price. Others quote the moling process alone and list everything else as extras. The only way to compare fairly is to know what each price covers.

Check accreditations. For water work, WIRS registration is the baseline. WIAPS is the minimum standard for anyone working on the water supply network. These matter because they indicate the contractor operates under the regulatory framework set out in the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 and holds the competencies required for highway and utility work.

Longer runs typically offer better value per metre. If you can combine work or coordinate with other utility installations on the same site, the fixed cost element is shared across more metreage.
