Berkshire has no county council. It was abolished in 1998 and replaced by six unitary authorities, each its own highway authority, so this page covers permits granted by Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire, Reading, Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham. If you are looking for works in one town, they are all here together.

Works along the M4 corridor, the A34 through Newbury and the streets of every town in between appear as soon as a permit is raised, updated through the day from the Department for Transport’s open data feed. Each row says who is digging, which part of the street is affected, and when the works are due to finish.

How to read this page

What appears here

A row appears when anyone raises a permit with the highway authority to work on a street in one of our counties, and that permit is currently open. Permits are the legal mechanism for working on the highway, so this is a broad picture of permitted works rather than a sample, though it is only ever as complete and as current as the published feed. Works that finished earlier the same day stay until midnight, marked as complete, so the page shows things ending as well as starting.

What is listed

Permits inside their permitted dates: works in progress, works planned, and works completed today, raised by every utility and council operating here. It is local information, not a list of our own jobs. A permit records what has been authorised rather than what is happening on site minute by minute, and traffic management is shown as it currently stands, which is not always what was originally applied for.

Why we publish it

We work on these streets and the information is public but hard to see. Sector comes from the promoter's entry in the SWA register, so one we have not classified yet appears under "Other" rather than being left off. This is a reading of a public dataset, not an official roadworks service, and it should not be relied on for site decisions. If you need to know about works affecting a specific site, talk to us or contact the highway authority directly.

Common questions

Every organisation that digs up a public highway in England must raise a permit with the highway authority through Street Manager, the Department for Transport service that records street works. DfT republish those permits as open data. This page shows the permits currently raised in the counties we work in, whoever raised them.

The feed is near real time. This page refreshes its figures every fifteen minutes, and the update time shown at the top is the moment the figures were generated, not the moment you loaded the page.

This page lists permits that are inside their permitted dates: works in progress, works planned, and works completed today. A dig you can see may have passed the end date on its permit, may be running under a licence this feed does not carry, or may not have reached the feed yet. The permit record still exists with the highway authority either way.

Everyone who has to raise a permit: water companies, gas and electricity networks, telecoms and fibre operators, and the councils themselves. Use the sector buttons to narrow the list down. We work in water and civils, so that is the part we know best, but the list is not restricted to it.

No. There is no open feed of leaks, bursts, outages or service interruptions in England. This shows permitted works on the highway: who is digging, where, under what traffic management, and when the works were due to finish. Emergency repairs do appear, because they still need a permit, but they are not labelled by what caused them.

Works that finished earlier today stay on the list until midnight, marked as complete, so you can see what has just come off the road as well as what is still on it. They are not counted in the open permits figure at the top. After midnight they drop off.

We track the counties we work in. Coverage widens over time rather than all at once, because each highway authority has to be added individually and London alone has more than thirty.
